Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris, born October 20, 1964 was a prominent American politician as well as a lawyer. She is currently the 49th vice president of the United States. She is the first woman to hold the vice president and is the highest ranking female official in U.S history. As a member of the Democratic Party, she previously served as attorney general for California from 2011 to 2017 and as the state's attorney general from 2011 to 2017 and as a United States senator representing California between 2017 and 2021. Born in Oakland, California, Harris graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Harris started her career in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Then, she was recruited by the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In 2003 she was elected district attorney of San Francisco. Harris was elected Attorney General of California in 2010 and was elected again in 2014. Harris was the junior United States senator from California between 2017 and 2021. Harris beat Loretta Sánchez during the 2016 Senate elections, becoming the 2nd African American woman, and the first South Asian American, to be a senator in the United States Senate. As a senator, she advocated for reforms to healthcare as well as federal de-scheduling cannabis, a path to citizenship for immigrants who are not legal as well as the DREAM Act, a ban on assault weapons, and progressive tax reform. In the news, attention was paid to her outspoken examination of Trump administration officials at Senate sessions. This included Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh who was accused of sexual abuse.
